Every move decides the outcome
Reach the center of a lock past its rotating rings, using the small gaps in them - the pins - as your only way through. Line up your pick, wait for the right moment, and make your attempt. Time it right and the ring stops. Miss it, and your pick takes the damage - do it too often, and the lock keeps whatever it was holding.
It might seem simple, but not for long: as the locks get harder, only the most determined reach the highest levels.
